This year, Detroit is celebrating Juneteenth in big ways. Read on and mark your calendars for some exciting events, both in-person and online.
Detroit Juneteenth Events
1. Détroit is the New Black’s Block Party
On Saturday, June 20th, local favorite Détroit is the New Black will be hosting a block party outside their store on Woodward Avenue. Expect live music, DJs, vendors, movies, live painters and more. There will be a black business crawl from 1-6 p.m., and a movie shown in Parker’s Alley at 9:30 p.m. Free masks will be provided and social distancing will be practiced.
2. Ponyride’s Virtual Summit Makers Market
Detroit’s small business incubator, Ponyride, usually hosts Makers Markets throughout the year, but this year they will hold it online. On Friday, June 19th, there will be shopping, live music, food demos, speakers and workshops held on Ponyride’s website. You will be able to shop Ponyride Detroit’s brands, and 100% of the proceeds will go towards those brands. The event will be held from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. and 4-6 p.m.
3. Juneteenth Freedom Rally
Taking place in Detroit’s Spirit Plaza, the Juneteenth Freedom Rally will have live entertainment, giveaways, an unveiling of new street art, and candid conversation about Detroit’s black community. Bring a mask and celebrate Juneteenth in the heart of downtown Detroit.
4. Juneteenth Black Author Virtual Book Fair
Detroit Book City will be hosting a virtual book fair in honor of Juneteenth this year, celebrating black authors with live conversations every 15 minutes. Videos will be streamed to their website and their Facebook page.
